Openreach have announced that by 2027 all analogue phone lines will be replaced with digital ones. To ensure personal alarm customers are supported during and after the switchover, Taking Care have tested the full Age Co Personal Alarm product range in Openreach's laboratory with the leading telephone providers' networks including BT, Sky, TalkTalk and others.
"Digital Alarms" are future proof and do not rely on a telephone landline. They will not be affected by the switchover to digital phone lines. All calls and data are included in the subscription.
"Landline Alarms" connect to a traditional telephone landline but have been tested in Openreach's laboratory with the leading telephone providers' digital networks to ensure maximum longevity. However, you may need to pay an upgrade fee if your telephone provider makes a change in the future that affects your alarm. For more information, you can speak with the Taking Care Sales team by calling 0800 085 7371. Lines are open Monday – Friday, 8am - 6pm.
You can find out more about the digital switchover in Taking Care's Resources and Advice hub or on the Openreach website.
If you, or the person you are ordering for, have a condition that requires medication or are registered disabled you may not have to pay VAT on your order. Before you complete your order, you will be asked for some details of the person using the alarm so Taking Care can provide the best possible response in an emergency. Subscription includes rental of the personal alarm equipment.
Taking Care GO is not recommended if you spend most of your time at home because mobile reception may be limited indoors due to mobile blackspots. Taking Care Anywhere is suggested as an alternative and includes the GO pendant with a base unit for the best possible coverage at home.

If you have a pacemaker then you should not wear the pendant around your neck and fall detection will need to be turned off. This is because a mobile device should not be placed near a pacemaker.
If you have a pacemaker, select this option when ordering. Taking Care will turn off the fall detection feature. You should attach the location-aware GPS pendant to the supplied split ring, which can be attached to a belt clip or keys, so it is not worn around the neck. The location-aware GPS pendant must be kept at a minimum distance of 15cm from your pacemaker at all times.
If you have a pacemaker, Taking Care will send the pendant with fall detection turned off and it should not be worn around the neck. No mobile device should be placed near a pacemaker.
Taking Care Sense is a small, discreet sensor placed in in the kitchen that monitors the atmosphere and activity levels in the room.
Taking Care Sense provides additional reassurance if you do not live close to your loved ones or if you worry they may not use a personal alarm. Learn more about Taking Care Sense.
Because Taking Care Sense is not an emergency device, Taking Care will not be able to call the Emergency Services if an issue is detected. Therefore, it is vital you have at least one person who is a nominated contact that Taking Care can call if an issue is detected. Your order confirmation email will include details of how to tell Taking Care who your nominated contacts are.
Add Taking Care Sense for the equivalent of just £2.65 per week. Taking Care Sense discreetly monitors daily patterns of behaviour and alerts Taking Care's Emergency Resolution team when activity levels change.
If you need assistance it’s reassuring to know that your family, carers, and if necessary, the emergency services can quickly gain access to your home without causing damage. A key safe is a secure, weatherproof box to keep a set of keys outside your home. It can be fitted to any brick built or concrete external wall, outhouse or garage and is designed to hold up to three Yale-type or one deadlock key. Please ensure you have a spare key ready to store in your key safe.
Unlike personal alarms, key safes are not eligible for VAT exemption under the current UK government rules. You can find out more about key safes here.
Taking Care provide instructions to fit your key safe. You will need a power drill, 5mm drill bit suitable for masonry and a T30 Torx screwdriver.
With a key safe, there is always a way to get help to you in an emergency at home.
You do not need to pay VAT on some goods, including personal alarms, if you, or the person you are ordering for, have a condition that requires regular medication, are chronically sick or are registered disabled.
Key safes are not VAT exempt so you will have to pay VAT on this part of your order if you add a key safe to your package.
94% of customers do not need to pay VAT on their personal alarm orders. If you think you are exempt from paying VAT, you will be asked to provide a short summary during the check-out process. Taking Care may contact you later to confirm your VAT exemption status.
You can check the VAT exemption web page for a list of example medical conditions that are applicable. Common conditions include chronic sickness, such as diabetes, as well as arthritis, cardiac failure, glaucoma and stroke.
You may be exempt from paying VAT if you or the person you are ordering the alarm service for have a condition that requires medication or are registered disabled. Read more about VAT exemption.

If you have a pacemaker then you cannot wear the pendant and fall detection will need to be turned off. This is because a mobile device should not be placed near a pacemaker.
If you have a pacemaker, tell Taking Care when you place your order by telephone or select the pacemaker option when ordering online. Taking Care will turn off the fall detection feature. You should attach the GO pendant to the supplied split ring, which can be attached to a belt clip or keys, so it is not worn around the neck. The GO pendant must be kept at a minimum distance of 15cm from your pacemaker at all times. If you have any questions or concerns, Taking Care is happy to help. The Taking Care GO pendant connects to the strongest available 3G or 4G network.
The 3G network is being gradually phased out over the coming years, with the Government requiring that all 3G networks are switched off by 2033. While the mobile network operators are making changes at different times, you don’t need to worry as your Go pendant is set to "roam" to find the strongest signal that is available for you at that time. There is therefore no immediate issue and we expect 3G networks will continue to operate successfully for many years to come..
The set-up cost includes setting up your account with Taking Care and registering you as a customer. The GO pendant will work out of the box and no installation is required.
The GO pendant has a sensor that uses an algorithm to recognise the difference between ‘hard’ falls and other movements. Like many similar devices on the market, it cannot guarantee to detect all falls because it is dependent on where it is worn and the amount of shock or impact from the fall. If you fall and are able to press the emergency button then you should do so.
Once you have submitted your order online, you will be taken to a page in order to complete a Direct Debit instruction form. In case you are not able to complete this straight away, a link to the form will also be sent within your order confirmation email.
Your order confirmation email will also include a link to an online account setup form. Please complete and submit this form so that Taking Care have the following details available in case an emergency alarm call is made:
Medical details – so Taking Care can arrange the most appropriate help in an emergency, please provide details of any medical conditions.
Emergency contacts – so Taking Care know who to contact in an emergency, please provide the names, addresses and phone numbers of family, friends or neighbours. Taking Care will also ask if your contacts are keyholders that can access your home in an emergency.
Key safe – if you have a key safe, let Taking Care know the code and location so they can get help to you in an emergency.
If you place your order before 1pm Monday - Friday then your order will be shipped as next working day delivery to postcodes in England and Wales only. For other areas, delivery time will be 48 hours instead.
If you provide a mobile number, Taking Care will send you an SMS message to let you know your personal alarm is on its way.
Everything you need is provided with your order and you will also receive an easy-to-follow user guide.
Taking Care will also ask you for some emergency contact numbers who they can contact for you if you need help. If you already have a key safe they will ask for the code and location so if necessary this information can be passed onto the emergency services.
Taking Care wants to be able to arrange the best help for you in an emergency so they will also ask if you have any medical conditions.
You have the right to cancel within 30 days of purchase and Taking Care will refund your order once the equipment is returned.
The subscription is paid by Direct Debit and for convenience Taking Care recommends you set this up when you order online. If ordering by telephone then the Direct Debit Instruction will be set up over the phone with you by Taking Care's sales advisors. Your Direct Debit will be confirmed in writing by Taking Care no later than 10 working days before the first collection.
When you place your order online, you will have two payment options to choose from. You can choose to pay the set up cost as part of your first Direct Debit payment, in which case you will need to complete the Direct Debit Instruction shown when you have completed your order.
Or you may prefer to pay the one-off set up cost and first subscription payment by debit or credit card and set up the Direct Debit later. Some customers prefer this option if someone else is paying for the subscription. For example, customers may order the personal alarm service for family members who wish to pay the subscription themselves.
Your order confirmation email will include a link to the Direct Debit Instruction in case someone else needs to set it up or you wish to do it later. If you have any problems setting up the Direct Debit, please call the Taking Care Customer Services team on 0800 085 8032, 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday or email enquiries@ppptakingcare.co.uk.
If you order online or by telephone and provide an email address, you will receive an order confirmation email with a link to an online account setup form. If you do not have an email address, you can complete and return the form included in your welcome pack with your personal alarm.
Please complete either form so that Taking Care has the following details available in case an emergency alarm call is made:
